Here’s a quick review of the BMW ICOM Next A+B+C, the new diagnostic tool made in China:
1.Performance and Build Quality: The ICOM Next is noticeably faster than the older BMW ICOM models and seems to be better built. It comes equipped with Wi-Fi, which enhances its functionality. It excels in multiprogramming and coding, completing tasks such as flashing an entire vehicle much more quickly. Additionally, it is compatible with future vehicles, offering an edge in terms of longevity and adaptability.
2. Reliability: I’ve been using an ICOM Next clone without any issues. It has performed flawlessly, meeting all my expectations.
3. Durability: My Chinese ICOM Next has been operational for over a year, and it’s still working perfectly. Despite the high initial cost, it has proven to be a worthwhile investment.
4. Build Quality: Overall, the quality is quite good. However, the caps on the USB, Enet, etc., tend to pop open easily and don't serve much purpose. On the positive side, the Enet cable is very long, and the OBD cable is quite durable, which I find very satisfactory.
5. Heat Management: My old ICOM A2 eventually burned out due to heat, but the ICOM Next seems to handle heat dissipation much better, improving its reliability during extended use.
6. Connectivity: The Wi-Fi connection is strong and stable, and the LAN cable is reliable, extending a good 10 meters. Programming the BMW EGS transmission control module is straightforward and efficient.
7. Diagnostic Capabilities: I’ve had ongoing electrical issues with my 2001 car, which has always had dashboard warning lights despite dealer repairs. The ICOM Next quickly diagnosed and resolved the problem within an hour, which was a significant relief.
In Summary: The ICOM Next surpasses the older BMW ICOM in speed and build quality. Its Wi-Fi capability and efficient handling of multiprogramming and coding make it a valuable tool for flashing entire vehicles and future-proofing against newer models. Though newer ICOM versions may emerge in the next 2-3 years, the current ICOM Next offers excellent performance and reliability.
