What is silt dam?
Silt dam, refers to the soil erosion area at all levels of ditches built to stop the mud, silt for the purpose of soil and water conservation engineering measures.
How does it work?
Specific practice is in the Loess Plateau region of the medium-sized small ditches and small rivers (control watershed area of 20 square kilometers or more), choose a narrow part of the mountain from both sides of the soil into a dam with the height of the hill, the entire ditch completely locked. After that, the flood water is allowed to silt up in the ditch until the whole ditch is silted up into a small plain or basin. The silt dam constructed in the ditch seals off the channel for transporting sediment to the downstream from the source, and forms an artificial barrier at the gathering of sediment and the channel, which can quickly and completely control soil erosion. It can not only store the sediment from the slope into the ditch, but also fix the bed of the ditch.
Impact
ecological benefit
1.Regulates floods during the flood season and rationalizes the use of water resources
2.Promoted the return of steeply sloping cropland to forest and grassland, facilitated the restoration of large areas of vegetation, and improved the ecological environment
economic benefit
1.Good water and fertilizer conditions and high and stable yield
2.Laid the foundation for the development of high-quality and efficient agriculture
3.Created the conditions for a single food production in the past economic structure to transform into a variety of agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry, sideline, fisheries, increased farmers' incomes
4.Promoted the development of the rural commodity economy.
social benifit
1.Replacing bridges with dams, greatly improved transportation conditions
2.Effectively curbing the hazards caused by natural disasters such as floods and mudslides
