Couple or couples may refer to :

  • Couple (mechanics), a system of forces with a resultant moment but no resultant force
  • Couple (relationship), two people to whom each is the significant other of the other
  • Couple, a set of two of items of a type
  • Couple, a name for one pair of rafters [椽chuán]
  • Thermocouple, a type of temperature sensor

Couple, in mechanics, pair of equal parallel forces that are opposite in direction. The only effect of a couple is to produce or prevent the turning of a body. The turning effect, or moment, of a couple is measured by the product of the magnitude of either force and the perpendicular distance between the action lines of the forces. 换个百科全书:A couple is a pair of forces, equal in magnitude, oppositely directed, and displaced by perpendicular distance or moment. The simplest kind of couple consists of two equal and opposite forces whose lines of action do not coincide. This is called a "simple couple". The forces have a turning effect or moment called a torque about an axis which is normal (perpendicular →法线) to the plane of the forces. The SI unit [国际单位] for the torque of the couple is newton metre.

mechanic (adj.) late 14c., of a craft or skill, "pertaining to or involving mechanical labor" (a sense now usually with mechanical), also "having to do with tools," from Latin mechanicus "of or belonging to machines or mechanics; inventive," from Greek mēkhanikos "full of resources, inventive, ingenious," literally "mechanical, pertaining to machines," from mēkhanē "device, tool". Meaning "of the nature of or pertaining to machines" is from 1620s.

mechanics (n.) "the theory of machines," also, "the mathematical doctrine of the motions of particles and systems (especially rigid bodies) under the influence of force and constraints," 1640s, based on Late Latin mechanica, from Greek mekhanike, mekhanika.

mechanics (fig figurative 比喻) processes by which something is done or operates. For example, "The mechanics of staging a play are very complicated." 排演话剧的过程很复杂。

A thermocouple is an electrical device consisting of two dissimilar electrical conductors forming an electrical junction. A thermocouple produces a temperature-dependent voltage as a result of the thermoelectric effect, and this voltage can be interpreted to measure temperature. Thermocouples are a widely used type of temperature sensor.

Commercial thermocouples are inexpensive, interchangeable, are supplied with standard connectors, and can measure a wide range of temperatures. In contrast to most other methods of temperature measurement, thermocouples are self powered and require no external form of excitation. The main limitation with thermocouples is precision; system errors of less than one degree Celsius (°C) can be difficult to achieve.
