The Dragon Boat festival
The Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional Chinese festival and falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. People follow customs such as eating zongzi, racing dragon boats, hanging mugwort over a door, wearing a sachet, in order to pray for good fortune and ward off disasters.
Zongzi are pyramid-shaped dumplings made of glutinous rice, stuffed with different fillings and wrapped in bamboo leaves. On the day before the Dragon Boat Festival, my family got together after lunch. We all sit around the table, with glistening washed rice, fresh green bamboo leaves, and various fillings like sweet red beans and savory meat. Everyone was chatting and laughing as we start to wrap the zongzi. My grandmother showed me how to fold the leaves skillfully, and helped me to tie the strings firmly. My sister and brother were also eager to try, making some cute and funny-shaped zongzi. After making zongzi, my mother boiled them, first with big fire, then turn to small fire till rip.
One of the other customs during this festival is to hang calamus and mugwort. On the morning of the Dragon Boat Festival, my grandmother got some fresh calamus and mugwort from the vegetable field and l prepared some red string. We tie the calamus and mugwort together with the red string . Then, we put them in the doorways and windows. It is said that they have the functions of exorcising evil spirits, preventing epidemics and praying for peace and health.
There is no doubt that I have a good time during the Dragon Boat festival. And for me, the most happiness moment is that my family get together and have a big dinner.
