指令选择是后端将IR代码转换为特定目标代码的一个阶段。ISel有几个实现:

  • SDAGISel (Selection DAG Instruction Selection)
  • FastISel
  • GlobalISel

SDAGISel将IR转换为SelectionDAG节点。SelectionDAG节点是有向非循环图的节点。每个DAG代表一个基本块。每个基本块都有一个DAG。节点表示指令、变量和常量。在此过程之后,所有IR指令都被转换为特定于目标的机器指令。

从基本块创建DAG后,需要确定指令的顺序,因为DAG不保存该信息。为了做到这一点,我们必须有一个三地址表示。第一步是预寄存器分配,它确定指令的顺序。之后,指令被转换为MachineInstr三地址表示。

寄存器分配确定每个虚拟寄存器的目标特定物理寄存器。物理寄存器的数量是有限的,而虚拟寄存器的数量可以是无限的。

寄存器后分配使用特殊寄存器的知识,并使用这些知识,以使寄存器分配的效率达到最佳。

指令选择管道从LLVM IR代码开始,从该代码生成具有IR指令的DAG。然后DAG经过下降,IR指令被转换成机器指令。然后是将通用机器指令转换为目标特定指令的合法化。之后,我们使用DAG到DAG转换,将SelectionDAG节点转换为表示目标特定指令的节点。

FastISel是实现ISel的另一种方法。它有更好的性能,但不太可靠(与FastISel相比,SDAGISel可能是-0O)。它跳过了管道的下降部分,并使用TableGen描述符将IR直接转换为MachineInstr,用于简单指令,并对特定于目标的指令进行更复杂的处理。

GlobalISel优于SDAGISel的原因有很多:

  • Global, it doesn't work with basic blocks, but the whole function
  • Pipeline is more flexible, we can control which target-specific instructions will be selected while executing ISel
  • Easier to use and maintain
  • Contains it's own generic machine representation which is converted to target-specific machine representation easily
